By only buying what is on the list you avoid unwanted costs. This can save you large amounts of money if you only purchase what is on the list. Lastly, although water is relatively cheap, you can sometimes easily reduce the water usage. Limiting the time of showering is an easy tip which will save a lot of costs, not only for water usage but also for heating. For your garden, you can consider using rainwater rather than regular water.
